EPA Releases Synthesis Report on the Importance of Water to the US Economy

Competition for water will increase as the U.S. economy grows, and decision-makers in both the private and public sectors will need information that can help them maximize the benefits of this resource. However, reliable information on the economic importance of water is elusive. This report is an initial step toward raising awareness of water’s importance to our national economic welfare and assembling information that is critical to sustainably managing the nation’s water resources.

U.S. EPA Releases Climate Change Adaptation Implementation Plans; Invites Public Comment

In early November 2013, U.S. EPA released draft Climate Change Adaptation Implementation Plans for the Office of Water, other national programs, all 10 regional offices, and other offices to provide program-level detail on how offices will address EPA’s agency-wide draft Climate Change Adaptation Plan, which was released in February 2013.

Climate Ready Water Utilities

In January 2011, the National Drinking Water Advisory Council released its final version of its Climate Ready Water Utilities report, which contains 11 recommendations that will assist drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater systems across the nation to increase their resilience to climate change impacts. The report's findings and recommendations cover three topics: identify the behaviors that will characterize a climate ready utility; identify climate change-related tools, training, and products needed to enable climate ready utility behaviors; and explore ways to encourage

National Stormwater Calculator (US EPA)

U.S. EPA’s National Stormwater Calculator (SWC) is a desktop application that estimates the annual amount of rainwater and frequency of runoff from a specific site anywhere in the United States (including Puerto Rico). Estimates are based on local soil conditions, land cover, and historic rainfall records.

Climate Ready Water Utilities: Adaptation Strategies Guide for Water Utilities

The Climate Ready Water Utilities Adaptation Strategies Guide for Water Utilities was prepared by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an informational resource to assist drinking water and wastewater utility owners in understanding and addressing climate change risks. The goal is to provide drinking water and wastewater utilities with a basic understanding of how climate change can impact utility operations and missions and to provide examples of actions utilities can take to prepare for these impacts.

Business Continuity Plans for Water Utilities

The Water Research Foundation, in conjuction with AWWA and U.S. EPA, developed a business continuity planning guidance document, template, and online training video for water utilities. The goal of a business continuity plan is to maintain solid operations across all functions of an organization following an incident.

EPA Revised Public Notification Handbook

The purpose of this handbook is to explain the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Public Notification Rule and provide examples of effective public notices. This handbook is designed to meet the needs of public water systems of all sizes, including suggestions and instructions targeted to very small community systems that serve 500 people or fewer. Suggestions, along with other useful hints for creating effective notices for all systems, are set aside in boxes throughout the handbook. The attached version reflects an update to the initial document released in 2007.

EPA Cyber Security 101 for Water Utilities

In July 2012, the EPA released a Cyber Security 101 document for water utilities that provides a quick overview of the key features of any active and effective cyber security program. The document addresses potential types of cyber attacks on water systems, how cyber attacks can affect water systems, and basic recommendations for preventing cyber attacks.

EPA Water Security Initiative: Guidance for Building Laboratory Capabilities to Respond to Drinking Water Contamination

In March 2013, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released a document written for utilities developing a sampling and analysis program as part of a Contaminant Warning System but that may also be useful to utility partners such as public health, state, EPA regional, and commercial laboratories.
