Climate Change Could Make Hurricanes Stronger and More Frequent

On July 9, Time magazine featured an article that examines a new study, featured in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, which contradicts the prevailing scientific opinion on the frequency of major hurricanes. The consensus, however, appears to indicate that hurricanes will be stronger as a result of climate change and that the preparedness and resilience challenges are more significant.

EPA Revised Public Notification Handbook

The purpose of this handbook is to explain the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Public Notification Rule and provide examples of effective public notices. This handbook is designed to meet the needs of public water systems of all sizes, including suggestions and instructions targeted to very small community systems that serve 500 people or fewer. Suggestions, along with other useful hints for creating effective notices for all systems, are set aside in boxes throughout the handbook. The attached version reflects an update to the initial document released in 2007.

EPA Cyber Security 101 for Water Utilities

In July 2012, the EPA released a Cyber Security 101 document for water utilities that provides a quick overview of the key features of any active and effective cyber security program. The document addresses potential types of cyber attacks on water systems, how cyber attacks can affect water systems, and basic recommendations for preventing cyber attacks.
