Water and wastewater utilities face an increasingly complex set of threats, both natural and man-made, that can disrupt or even incapacitate utility services. One of the primary ways to be able to prepare for and respond to threats across the all-hazards landscape is to create emergency response plans.
As sea levels rise across the coastal U.S., flooding, specifically high tide flooding, is becoming increasingly more common. With climate change expected to continue driving sea level rise and flooding events, water and wastewater utilities along the coast are encouraged to start planning to mitigate and respond to these types of contingencies.
FEMA recently announced the Fiscal Year 2024 funding opportunity making approximately $191 million available to support 110 mitigation projects across the country. The funds are available through the Pre-Disaster Mitigation (PDM) grant program, which provides federal funds for projects designed to reduce the risk to individuals and property from future natural hazards.

Meteorologists at NOAA predict above-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic this year, highlighting the importance of hurricane preparedness.

CISA’s Office for Bombing Prevention (OBP) recently announced the addition of two new training classes to its suite of Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) courses. The new classes, “Suspicious Activity Recognition for Bombing Prevention” and “Introduction to Bomb Threat Management,” are being offered in online sessions throughout the summer.
