As Wildfire Season Heats Up, Utilities are Encouraged to Start Preparing Now with EPA Resources

The heatwave last week impacting large parts of the Southwestern U.S. is likely the beginning of what many experts warn will be a potentially record-breaking hot summer, increasing the risk of an active wildfire season. As wildfire season heats up, water and wastewater utilities are encouraged to utilize EPA’s free resources to strengthen their preparedness and resilience efforts.

CSU Releases Updated Atlantic Hurricane Season Forecast, Maintains Prediction of Extremely Active Season

Today, Colorado State University’s (CSU’s) Tropical Meteorology Project released an update to its “Forecast of Atlantic Seasonal Hurricane Activity and Landfall Strike Probability for 2024.” The update maintains its previous prediction of an extremely active season, anticipating 23 named storms for this year’s Atlantic hurricane season.

A Heat Dome Currently Impacting the Southwestern U.S. is an Important Reminder to Prepare for Extreme Heat during the Summer Season

An early season heat dome is creating life-threatening temperatures for 30 million people across the Southwest, from Texas to California. These soaring temperatures serves as an important reminder for water and wastewater utilities to prepare their staff for increasing instances of extreme heat, which are projected to grow due to climate.

Operational Resilience – Exercise Emergency Response Plans Through Tabletop Exercises

Following up on Tuesday’s Security and Resilience Post on emergency planning, the next step in the security process is to exercise those plans. As WaterISAC has previously emphasized, exercises are an important part of a preparedness program, helping organizations build, improve, and validate their plans, policies, and procedures while strengthening their operational resilience.
