U.S. Water Reservoirs are Shrinking and Becoming Less Reliable, according to New Research

A recent study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters found that major water reservoirs across the continental U.S. are facing increased periods of low storage that are longer, more severe, and more variable compared to several decades ago. To help with this issue, utilities are encouraged to review EPA's resilience resources for guidance on managing water scarcity.

In-Depth Research Report Examines the Barriers for Insider Threat Reporting, Offers Methods to Increase Employee Reporting

Researchers from Carleton University recently published a study titled “‘The pull to do nothing would be strong’: limitations & opportunities in reporting insider threats,” that analyzes the effectiveness of insider threat reporting programs. Augmenting employees’ ability to report suspicious activity can significantly reduce the risk of insider threats.

FEMA's Announces Upcoming Virtual Training – Addressing Dam Risk in Your Hazard Mitigation Plan

FEMA recently announced it is hosting a free virtual training course to help infrastructure owners and operators, as well as other relevant stakeholders, integrate dam safety considerations into an overall hazard mitigation plan. Members who operate dams are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity, which will help enhance an organization’s operational resilience and preparedness.

NOAA Researchers Predict High Tide Flooding May Lessen Across the U.S. in Latest Report

Last week, NOAA released its “2024-25 Annual High Tide Flooding Outlook” report. NOAA researchers predict fewer high-tide flood days than last year. The outlook details high-tide flooding events from May 2023 to April 2024 at 97 NOAA tide gauges along the U.S. coast. It also provides a flooding outlook for these locations through April 2025 accompanied by decadal projections and sea level rise scenarios out to 2050. 

Deadline this Thursday – FEMA's Planning for Dam Emergencies Collaborative Technical Assistance Program

The FEMA Planning for Dam Emergencies Collaborative Technical Assistance (CTA) Program has reopened its FY24 application cycle, with the application window closing on Thursday, August 15. The CTA Program aims to enhance the emergency preparedness of communities with dams through a variety of targeted sessions and resources.
