Workplace Violence and How to Address It

Domestic Preparedness has written an article discussing workplace violence, emphasizing there are often warning signs or pre-violence indicators ahead of an incident that make early warning and intervention key to prevention.

The article explains workplace violence can be divided into five different categories: violence to employees during a crime, violence between employee and customer, violence between employees, domestic violence, and terrorism. The article also lists out some of the preparation activities that organizations can undertake. Education is the first step, respectfully utilizing past incidents to help staff understand the best actions to take in a worst case scenario. Trauma training and first aid kit access for volunteer employees can also be useful. Spending resources on building and training emergency procedures can pay dividends, especially if an organization retains an emergency manager on staff. While the article recommends companies promote a culture of open communication to counter internal violence, it suggests they focus on hardening key assets to counter external violence.
