Water Utilities Support Utility Scam Awareness Week – November 17-23, 2019

Given that people are most concerned about the loss of utility services during cold months, scammers are particularly virulent this time of year. Imposter utility scammers typically use phone, in-person, and online tactics to target customers when they are most afraid of losing power and water. This year, Pennsylvania American Water joined Utilities United Against Scams (UUAS) to recognize the fourth annual Utility Scam Awareness Day on Wednesday, November 20. Utility Scam Awareness Day is part of the week-long National Scam Awareness Week, an advocacy and awareness campaign focused on educating customers and exposing the tactics used by scammers. This year’s theme is ‘It Happened to Me, Don’t Let it Happen to You.’ In a document shared by FirstEnergy, to date in 2019, FirstEnergy’s utilities have received more than 1,600 reports of scams from customers – outpacing last year’s total number by more than 200. Members are encouraged to join FirstEnergy, Pennsylvania American Water, and other participating water utilities in fighting imposter utility scams. Read more at Pennsylvania American Water
