TLP:CLEAR

Categories: Cybersecurity, Security Preparedness

Summary: The IT-ISAC recently released its “2025 Annual Ransomware Report,” highlighting a significant surge in ransomware activity across critical infrastructure sectors. In 2025, the IT-ISAC recorded 6,351 total ransomware incidents, including 746 targeting the IT sector—more than double the 300 IT-sector incidents reported in 2024.

Analyst Note: The changing ransomware ecosystem is pressuring the water sector from multiple angles, directly targeting utilities, exploiting municipalities they operate within, and compromising third-party dependencies. This new data from IT-ISAC helps critical infrastructure see a bigger-picture representation of the ransomware landscape and what the changing landscape likely means for the road ahead.
