Summary: September is National Preparedness Month. This annual observance aims to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for natural disasters and other emergencies that could occur at any time. During this month, government agencies and other organizations remind their partners of the resources available to help protect themselves and strengthen their operational resilience.

Analyst Note: The 2025 National Preparedness Month theme “Preparedness Starts at Home,” is a return to the basics of preparedness. The theme recognizes the role and responsibility everyone has in preparedness. Although the theme does not focus on organizations and businesses, WaterISAC reminds its members that employee readiness is essential for organizational readiness and, therefore, should train their employees appropriately. FEMA’s Ready Campaign has observed National Preparedness Month annually since 2004.

Members are encouraged to review FEMA’s 2025 National Preparedness Month toolkit. The toolkit is designed with preparedness messages and graphics anyone can use on their social media, in emails, newsletters and beyond.

Moreover, as part of National Preparedness Month FEMA is asking people to take four key actions to prepare for any disaster they may face:

  • Know your risk
  • Make a family emergency plan
  • Build an emergency supply kit
  • Get involved in their community by taking action to prepare for emergencies

Additionally, EPA’s Water Resilience webpage has many free tools and resources on a variety of topics related to water resilience that utilities can review. Resources available through EPA cover topics such as Contamination Preparedness and Response, Emergency Preparedness and Response, Preparedness Exercises, and more. Lastly, CISA offers resilience services and resources for free to critical infrastructure organizations across the country.
