Test Your Backups Before You Need Them

Maintaining backups is essential, but regularly testing them is just as important. WaterISAC encourages utilities to periodically verify that critical systems, configurations, and data can be successfully restored from backup copies. Restoration testing helps identify gaps in backup coverage, validates recovery procedures, and ensures personnel are prepared to recover operations following a ransomware attack, system failure, or other disruptive event. A backup that has never been tested may not be available when it is needed most.
