U.S. Government Bans Sales of Huawei, Hikvision, ZTE, and Dahua Equipment

The U.S. government, via the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), recently banned the sale of equipment from Chinese telecommunications and video surveillance vendors Huawei, ZTE, Hytera, Hikvision, and Dahua due to “unacceptable risks to national security.” Last week, the FCC adopted new rules prohibiting the aforementioned communications equipment being authorized for importation or sale in the country. According to the FCC, “the new rules prohibit the authorization of equipment through the FCC’s Certification process and make clear that such equipment cannot be authorized under the Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity process or be imported or marketed under rules that allow exemption from an equipment authorization.” This latest ban builds on previous rounds of restrictions. Over the past few years, the U.S. and other allied countries have restricted the use of telecommunications equipment from Huawei and ZTE.
