Summary: FEMA’s PrepToolkit is an online portal that provides emergency managers and public safety officials with tools to help them implement all six areas of the National Preparedness System. It helps stakeholders across all sectors work together to prepare for risks their communities face. With severe winter weather forecast to impact a large portion of the U.S. this weekend, utilities are encouraged to leverage these free resources.
Analyst Note: The heightened risk of extreme weather events serves as an important reminder for the importance of conducting preparedness activities to help strengthen organizational resilience, allowing an organization to more effectively respond and recover, in the event of a natural hazard or other emergency situation. Notably, it includes a hazard explorer webpage that contains several resources such as the “National Risk Index for Natural Hazards,” which provides information for communities most at risk to 18 different natural hazards.
In addition, FEMA’s PrepToolkit includes the Exercise Builder tool, developed and supported by the Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program (HSEEP). This tool helps users manage and execute exercise planning, design, operation and evaluation all in one location. Lastly, another tool is the Resource Inventory System (RIS), a centralized, secure, and cloud-hosted resource inventory solution for use by local stakeholders in building and strengthening resource management preparedness.
