NOAA Upgrades Storm Surge Prediction Model in the Face of Climate Change

The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has updated its Probabilistic Storm Surge (P-Surge) model to version 3.0. The agency utilizes the P-Surge model as its primary method for predicting storm surges for high-impact weather events, like hurricanes and tropical storms, impacting the continental U.S., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Study: Upstream Forest Development Results in Significant Loss of Water Quality

The USDA Forest Service has released a press release covering a study from federal researchers analyzing the impacts of forest loss on water quality. The scientists focused on the Southern U.S., where over 80 percent of forests are privately owned and have seen significant reductions due to development, and found, among other items, that developing just 1 percent of forests upstream of an intake could result in an average 0.4 percent increase in the concentration of suspended sediment in the water.

Study: Flash Floods, Natural Disasters Have More Significant Impacts on Housing Insecure Citizens

The Conversation has written an article about a study analyzing how housing security played a role in national natural disaster preparedness. The study found 57 percent of the population were not prepared in the areas of food, water, emergency funds, and transportation in case of natural disaster. Taking housing into effect, insecure households, or those behind on their payments, were even less prepared for disaster even compared to socioeconomic peers.
