Potential Impacts of Climate Change on Water Supplies and Other Infrastructure in the Platte River Basin

DHS has prepared an Infrastructure Risk Assessment that evaluates how climate impacts water supplies in the Platte River basin and other critical infrastructure sectors. The Platte is a major river in Nebraska and is fed by tributaries from Wyoming and Colorado; it is a tributary of the Missouri River, which is itself a tributary of the Mississippi River. This Assessment describes the predicted impacts on the area from such phenomena as floods and droughts, and it presents some mitigation options for such events.

Adapting California’s Water Management to Climate Change

As part of the Preparing California for a Changing Climate project, the Public Policy Institute of California released Adapting California’s Water Management to Climate Change. Among the potential impacts of climate change, accelerated sea level rise and a reduced Sierra snowpack are the most certain. Both will pose significant challenges for water supply and flood management. Water utilities have already begun to plan for these changes, but flood control agencies are lagging behind and face greater regulatory constraints.
