The Story of an American Islamic State Member Captured in Syria

On January 6, Syrian forces claimed they captured five Islamic State fighters, which they alleged included two U.S. citizens. Two employees of the Program on Extremism at George Washington University have written an article discussing the case of one of the citizens, a 34-year-old man from Houston, Texas (the identity of the other man has not been disclosed). The Program on Extremism had previously conducted research on the individual as part of its larger effort to understand the phenomenon of U.S. citizens traveling overseas to join the Islamic State. Based on that research, it seems the man joined the Islamic State with the hopes of teaching English and to be part of the group’s wider utopian state-building project, rather than to engage in violence and fighting. Still, the man will likely face a number of federal terrorism charges should he be returned to the U.S. If he is extradited, he would be the fifteenth American known to have returned home after joining the Islamic State.
