Spring Flooding Outlook 2021

Author: WaterISAC Analyst

Categories: Natural Disasters

The risk of spring flooding in 2021 is higher in parts of the Midwest, according to the Weather Channel, and lower in the Plains and West.  Meteorologists predict near or below-average risk in the Northeast; above-average risk in the Ohio Valley, mid-Mississippi Valley, and lower Mississippi Valley; near or above-average risk in the Southeast; below-average risk in the Plains and much of the West; and near or below-average risk in the Northwest. Several rivers are above flood stage, primarily in the Ohio Valley, parts of the lower Mississippi Valley and along the Southeast coastal plain from Virginia to northern Florida, the Weather Channel notes. And rivers are running high, too, in the parts of the East, where watersheds are saturated. By contrast, the ongoing drought in the Plains and West means the soil there will be able to absorb spring rains.
