Small Systems Aren't Small Potatoes-Why Rural Water Utilities Need Cybersecurity & What to Do About It

We joined with the National Rural Water Association (NRWA) to host a three-part webinar series to provide water utilities with cybersecurity educational presentations that provide basic security advice which can be incorporated by water and wastewater utilities of all sizes.

These webinars we designed for everyone, from brand new operators to members of the board.

  • PART 1 - SECURITY CULTURE
The first webinar covered the basics of cybersecurity culture, including aspects of cybersecurity awareness, insider threats, and physical security. Attendees gained knowledge on what to look out for in phishing emails, the very real problem of insider threats and what we can all do to minimize the risk, and how physical security is critical to cybersecurity and is everybody's job.

  • PART 2 - ACCOUNT PROTECTION
The second webinar covered the basics of account protection, including password protection, multifactor authentication, and remote access. Attendees gained knowledge on creating passwords that protect critical systems, strengths and weaknesses of different types of multifactor authentication, and secure remote-access options.

  • PART 3 - RISK MANAGEMENT
The third and final webinar covered the basics of risk management, including patching, backups, and incident response. Attendees gained knowledge on patching prioritization, backup precautions, and essential elements of cybersecurity incident preparation and response.
