National Preparedness Month, Week 3: Youth Preparedness

Author: Charles Egli

The theme for the third week of National Preparedness Month, “Youth Preparedness,” serves as a reminder that the ability of employees to assist with emergency response operations can depend on them knowing that their children, as well as their entire families, are prepared should the situation impact them as well. It can mean having a communications plan in place so adults can contact children to verify their safety, having sufficient medical supplies (e.g., prescription medications) on hand in case dispensaries are closed or supply chains are impacted, and asking a child’s teacher about the plans the school has in place for emergencies. To help its partners understand the importance of youth preparedness and begin taking action, FEMA has posted a series of tips and resources on its NPM webpage. FEMA has also made available a series of graphics, videos, and other materials that can be used to engage with audiences and that speak to the NPM 2019 general theme of “Prepared, Not Scared.” Access the NPM website at FEMA.
