Intense Heat Events Will Continue to Rise, Outdoor Workers and Vulnerable Populations at Risk

The Washington Post has written an article discussing the surge in extreme heat seen this summer and the health impacts it has on the general populace.

Following a year where record-high greenhouse gases were observed and during a summer where the world record for the highest temperature ever officially recorded has been broken, more populations across the globe than ever before have been exposed to extreme heat events, with significant health consequences. Heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease, and even mental illness can occur or be exacerbated by being in the heat. Humans have died, whether working outside or living inside with no air conditioning.

This can have major impacts for critical infrastructure, as many lifeline sectors depend on outdoor employees. The article suggests that outdoor workers should begin to be trained and prepared for extreme heat in the near future. This would require leadership buy-in to secure safety equipment, such as whiter uniforms or ventilated clothing, and to train workers to pace themselves and take regular breaks during high-risk heat days.
