Five Terrorism Trends to Watch in 2021

An article in Homeland Security Today discusses the trends to look out for in the terrorism landscape of 2021. One of the threats pointed to is conspiracy theory extremism, with groups continuing to push the existence of conspiracies related to the COVID-19 pandemic and more throughout the country. Another threat is domestic extremism, with the article relaying that FBI Director Christopher Wray said in September that his organization Bureau usually has about 1,000 domestic terrorism investigations open each year, but that the number was already higher in 2020 – “a good bit north of 1,000.” One of the movements within domestic extremism of particular concern is “accelerationism,” which WaterISAC has discussed previously (including in its latest Threat Analysis for the Water and Wastewater Sector). Other topics covered in this article include domestic terrorism, complex coordinated attacks, and the Islamic State and al Qa’ida. Read the article at Homeland Security Today.
