FEMA Releases Updated Planning Guidance for Response to a Nuclear Detonation

FEMA’s Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Office, in conjunction with multiple federal agencies, has released the Third Edition of the Planning Guidance for Response to a Nuclear Detonation. The report is based on responding to a small nuclear detonation at ground level in an urban environment and provides education and context on the consequences of such an attack. This context is to enable emergency managers to leverage their existing incident response capabilities in order to handle a nuclear incident.  The guide also includes a section on decontaminating critical infrastructure during a nuclear incident. Updates in the Third Edition include guidance for a wider range of nuclear detonation types, a chapter on the Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (IPAWS), and new best practices and resources.
