The FBI has published a TLP:WHITE Private Industry Notification (PIN) warning that cyber criminals are creating fraudulent cryptocurrency investment applications to defraud financial institutions and other investors. Cyber criminals are seeking to exploit the increased interest in mobile banking and cryptocurrency investing. According to the PIN, “The FBI has observed cyber criminals contacting US investors, fraudulently claiming to offer legitimate cryptocurrency investment services, and convincing investors to download fraudulent mobile apps, which the cyber criminals have used with increasing success over time to defraud the investors of their cryptocurrency.” Additionally, the PIN provides recommendations for organizations and individuals to defend against this activity. The FBI encourages partners to report suspicious or criminal activity to their local FBI field office or the FBI’s 24/7 CyberWatch (CyWatch) at (855)292-3937 or Cy*****@*bi.gov. Access the PIN below.
