On April 17 at 2 pm ET, WaterISAC will convene the next event in its quarterly Water Sector Physical Threat Briefings series. Presenters from CISA and WaterISAC will discuss the increasing phenomenon of cyber-physical security convergence and the associated risks. Over the past decade, the adoption and integration of Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices have led to an increasingly interconnected web of cyber-physical systems, which expands the attack surface and blurs the once clear functions of cybersecurity and physical security. While there are many benefits associated with cyber-physical security convergence, there are also many risks.

On one end of the spectrum, physical security incidents can disrupt or destroy information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) infrastructure, impact networks, cause power outages, and more. On the opposite end are cyber events that can impact the physical world. In fact, cyber attacks against critical infrastructure can misuse and abuse industrial control systems to create real-world disruptions. During the briefing, the CISA and WaterISAC presenters will provide an overview of the cyber-physical security convergence landscape, associated risks, mitigation strategies, and more. In addition, the webinar will briefly cover insider threats and their relation to cyber-physical security convergence.
