Cyber Resilience – U.S. Cyber Trust Mark Launched for Consumer-Grade Internet-Connected Devices

This week, the White House launched the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, an initiative allowing consumers of internet-connected devices to verify if these devices are secure. The FCC decided in a bipartisan and unanimous vote to authorize the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark and adopt final rules for the official label that will be applied to certified products. The effort allows U.S. consumers an easy way to ensure smart devices have been manufactured securely, and provides manufacturers an incentive to meet this demand.

This effort has the same goal as CISA’s Secure by Demand and Secure by Design programs. These programs seek to hold software manufacturers accountable by helping consumers demand products that have been created in a secure fashion from the start, thus eliminating vulnerabilities before they occur and ensuring a more cyber secure future for everyone. This topic is so applicable to the water sector that there is a specific guidance resource created just for water utilities that speaks largely to this topic. Members are encouraged to review Fundamental 11: Secure the Supply Chain from WaterISAC’s 12 Cybersecurity Fundamentals for Water and Wastewater Utilities for further help and guidance pertaining to this effort. For more information, visit The White House.
