Cyber Resilience – U.K. Cyber Center 2022 Review: Ransomware, Phishing Remain Top Cyber Threats

This week, the U.K.’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) released its annual cybersecurity review, covering September 2021 to August 2022. The review states that over the past year, the cybersecurity threats to the U.K. have evolved significantly.

The main takeaway of the report is that ransomware continues to grow as a serious challenge to business, with 18 ransomware incidents occurring that required a “nationally coordinated” response. Yet businesses remain unenthusiastic about reporting incidents, making it difficult for the U.K. to understand its true impact. Indeed, in August, WaterISAC reported a ransomware threat actor claimed to have compromised a U.K. water utility. Additionally, phishing is another threat the report focuses on, stating that COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war were the most popular lures over this period. The agency also noted that its Suspicious Email Reporting Service received 6.5 million reports of suspicious emails, resulting in the removal of over 62,000 scam URLs. Read more at NCSC.
