Cyber Resilience – Michigan’s EGLE Launches Cybersecurity Plan for Water Treatment Operators

Categories: Cybersecurity, Security Preparedness

On Tuesday, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) unveiled an initiative aimed at enhancing cybersecurity preparedness for drinking water and wastewater treatment operators throughout Michigan. This initiative intends to establish a comprehensive strategy that bolsters operators’ resilience against both online and offline threats.

Operators are urged to refine their emergency response plans to incorporate escalating cyber threats, emphasizing cybersecurity best practices and actionable steps. The Michigan plan aligns with the March 19, 2024 letter to U.S. governors emphasizing the need for states and water systems to take immediate action. The letter specifically requests state support to ensure that all water systems in each state comprehensively assess their current cybersecurity practices to identify any significant vulnerabilities; deploy practices and controls to reduce cybersecurity risks where needed; and exercise plans to prepare for, respond to, and recover from a cyber incident.
