Critical Security and Resilience Month, Week 2 – Soft Target Security

Author: Charles Egli

Categories: Federal & State Resources, General Security and Resilience, Security Preparedness

The theme for this week of Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience Month is “Protecting our hometowns: Soft target security,” a reminder of the importance of being vigilant within your own community against potential threats. It also serves as a reminder that threat actors often focus their efforts on locations or populations they perceive to be the most vulnerable (“soft targets”) and that give them the highest chance of mission success. In its Infrastructure Security Month Toolkit, the DHS Cybersecurity and Security Infrastructure Agency (CISA) dedicates a section to soft targets. There it includes lists of steps to address soft target security and resources for further consideration and action. CISA’s Securing Soft Targets and Crowded Places Resource Guide is among the resources listed (posted to and described further on the WaterISAC portal). WaterISAC also encourages its members to be proactive in addressing their security threats, such as by completing risk assessments, and reporting on incidents and suspicious activities. Reports can be submitted to WaterISAC by emailing an*****@*******ac.org, calling 866-H2O-ISAC, or filling out the online Confidential Incident Reporting Form.
