The Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), a program within the U.S. Department of Justice, has made available two podcasts that take an in-depth look at issues related to planning for and responding to active shooter incidents. In the first podcast, a representative of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) discusses the NFPA 3000 Standard for an Active Shooter/Hostile Event Response Program, which addresses the necessary functions and actions related to preparedness, response, and recovery from an active shooter/hostile event. For the second podcast, a representative of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office for Victims of Crime discusses the importance of planning for victims of mass shootings. The speaker was also deeply involved in drafting NFPA 3000. In addition to these two selections, COPS has made available numerous other podcasts through its “The Beat” series. It includes podcasts on crisis/emergency management, using social media to deliver messages to the public, and gangs, among many more. Access the podcasts at COPS.
