Federal Government to Develop Domestic Violent Extremism Threat Assessment

Federal intelligence agencies will conduct a comprehensive threat assessment of domestic violent extremism as part of a major initiative by the Biden administration to address a “serious and growing national security threat.” The Office of the Director of National Intelligence will lead the development of the threat assessment, in coordination with the FBI and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. It will also draw on analysis from other federal government entities and external organizations. The threat assessment is among several actions the Biden administration is taking regarding mounting concerns about domestic extremism. The administration is also aiming to build out the capability of the National Security Council (NSC) to focus on domestic violent extremism. The NSC will review existing policies on preventing radicalization and attacks, and see what gaps need to be filled and then coordinate efforts to fill them.
