2020 State of the Homeland Address

Yesterday U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Chad Wolf delivered the 2020 State of the Homeland Address. In his address Secretary Wolf reflected on how DHS has evolved since it was founded more than 17 years ago. Speaking of this evolution, he discussed some of today’s potential threat vectors that didn’t exist at the time of the Department’s inception, which include smart phones and cryptocurrency. Secretary Wolf also dedicated a significant amount of his remarks to discussing how DHS had responded to COVID-19, as well as other current and ongoing challenges that include civil disturbances across the U.S. and domestic terrorism. As part of DHS’s efforts to address these and other challenges, he pointed to its “newest component,” the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), which he said “is at the forefront guarding against nation-state actors’ cyber-enabled espionage and malicious influence activity aimed at all levels of government and industry.” WaterISAC frequently collaborates and coordinates with CISA on security and resilience issues relevant to the water and wastewater sector.
