New Map to Aid Policymakers on Climate Change

An online map produced by the U.S. Geological Survey and Esri aims to provide officials and communities across the world with easy access to invaluable information to help inform decisions about climate change adaptation. Using satellite technology, the map features shots of the entire globe at 250 meters resolution, Esri’s Chief Scientist Dawn Wright says that because of climate change "people can see things changing in their communities.

Recommendations from State, Local, and Tribal Leaders to the President on Preparing the U.S. for the Impacts of Climate Change

The State, Local, and Tribal Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience has released a document of recommendations for how the Federal government can help prepare the U.S. for climate change. The formation of the Task Force was decreed in Executive Order 13653, Preparing the United States for the Impacts of Climate Change,which was released on November 1, 2013.

U.S. EPA Releases Climate Assessment Update to National Stormwater Calculator

The U.S. EPA recently released an updated version of the National Stormwater Calculator and Climate Assessment Tool package that includes future climate vulnerability scenarios. The calculator, a part of President Obama’s Climate Change Action Plan, is a desktop application that estimates the annual amount of stormwater runoff from a specific location. U.S.

Massachusetts Takes Steps to Withstand Climate Change Impacts

Governor Deval Patrick of Massachusetts earlier this week unveiled a $50 million plan to help prepare Massachusetts for the challenges climate change poses to energy supplies, public health, transportation, and basic infrastructure in his state. A $40 million grant from the state’s Department of Energy Resources will help cities and towns develop protections around energy services, and $10 million will go toward shoring up critical coastal infrastructure and dam repair.

U.S. EPA Releases Climate Change Adaptation Implementation Plans; Invites Public Comment

In early November 2013, U.S. EPA released draft Climate Change Adaptation Implementation Plans for the Office of Water, other national programs, all 10 regional offices, and other offices to provide program-level detail on how offices will address EPA’s agency-wide draft Climate Change Adaptation Plan, which was released in February 2013.

Weathering the Storm: Building Business Resilience to Climate Change

In July 2013, the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions  (C2ES) released a report that notes recent increases in costly extreme weather events have provided a clear signal to many companies of the near-term risks associated with climate change. These experiences call into question current assumptions about weather risk and preparedness, and call for much stronger responses by businesses—and governments. The report explores effective methods used by leading companies to build greater resilience into their operations, supply chains, preparedness policies, and risk management plans.
