The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reports Tropical Storm Calvin is forecast to pass over, or very close to, the Big Island of Hawaii tonight, bringing heavy rain, high surf, and locally strong winds. Afterwards, Calvin is forecast to move westward to the south of the other Hawaiian Islands, bringing the potential for some peripheral impacts.

From later today into Thursday, storm total rainfall amounts of 4-8 inches, with maximum amounts of 10 inches are possible, mainly along the windward areas of the Big Island, according to the NHC. Storm total rainfall amounts of 1-4 inches are expected elsewhere in the state. This rainfall could lead to localized flash flooding and mudslides. Additionally, tropical storm force winds are expected on the Big Island starting this evening. The NHC advises people on the Big Island to complete preparations during daylight hours prior to the onset of tropical storm conditions tonight. As of 5:00 am HST, Calvin was located just under 400 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii and moving west at 22 mph. It had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. Read more at the NHC.
