For the December 27 SRU, WaterISAC included a summary of an article from Homeland Security Today about how the federal government partial shutdown was affecting the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Now Homeland Security Today has published an article about how the shutdown affects the FBI, another important federal government office in the fight against terrorist and criminal threats. The article notes that an estimated 5,000, or 14 percent, of the FBI’s 35,000 agents, intelligence analysts, attorneys, and other staff have been furloughed, meaning that they are not reporting to work. The other 30,000, or 86 percent, of FBI employees are considered “excepted” from the shutdown and must report to work. Still, the personnel reporting to work are not receiving paychecks, and many associations linked to FBI employees, including the FBI Agents Association and the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, and security analysts have warned that this can detract from employees’ abilities to perform their jobs. Additionally, the FBI website has not been routinely maintained during the shutdown nor have its social media channels. Read the article at Homeland Security Today.
