Cofense, a leading cybersecurity firm in email security, recently released its 2024 Annual State of Email Security Report. The report reveals emerging trends in the email threat landscape, such as an increase in various phishing tactics. Most notable, the report indicates a significant (37%) increase in malicious emails that are bypassing secure email gateways (SEGs) over last year, and an overwhelming 310% increase since 2021. This is a reminder that while SEGs provide a valuable defense against email-based threats, it is important for users to be aware of the types of messages that are bypassing SEGs so they can recognize and report them.

Cofense highlights additional threats to watch out for including business email compromise (BEC), brand impersonation and vishing, Google AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages) phishing tactic (previously shared in the Security & Resilience Update for August 3, 2023), and others. The report discusses each of these tactics at-length and provides guidance along with details on how threat actors are using them. The full report can be accessed here, and for more details see Cofense.
