Unlikely but Highly Consequential – Resources to Prepare for Radiological and Nuclear Events

As part of National Preparedness Month, the Radiological/Nuclear Response and Recovery (RNRR) Program within DHS’s Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate has shared some of the products, tools, training, and guidance documents that can help planners and responders prepare for radiological and nuclear events.

As noted in the posting, such an event is unlikely but, if it occurred, would have severe consequences. The RNRR resources are categorized by emergency response guidance, software-based tools and information, training, and enhancements to existing planning and response software. Some of these resources include Planning Guidance for Response to a Nuclear Detonation, which supports responders’ understanding of the hazards and actions they should plan to take after a nuclear detonation, and the Nuclear Hazard Zone (NHZ) Tool, which can be used immediately after a detonation to produce hazard zone predictions that help determine where critical protective actions are needed. The posting also notes a recent episode of the Technologically Speaking podcast covered more about the RNRR programs offerings. Read more at DHS S&T.
