The Transnational Links of Canada’s Far-Right Group Terrorist Designations

The Soufan Center has written an article providing additional background into the Canadian government’s recent designation of numerous far-right groups as terrorist organizations (discussed in WaterISAC’s February 4 Security & Resilience Update). In particular, the article focuses on the groups’ transnational connections, noting that they all have links to organizations globally, and play an integral part in the transnational violent far-right extremist milieu. It also observes that there are growing concerns that post-COVID, once travel restrictions ease, there will be more cooperation between members of these organizations, traveling to network and strategize in Europe and North America and reinvigorate fundraising through events and personal interactions. Interestingly, the international networks of these groups are something they have in common with some of the more traditional terrorist groups, such as the Islamic State and al Qa’ida. As the article notes, these groups have built internationally recognizable brands, which are capable of radicalizing individuals across the globe and inspiring acts of racially and ethnically motivated violence. Read the article at the Soufan Center.
