Water/Wastewater – The Most Critical of All? We Think So!

Author: Jennifer Walker

In the latest in its series on compromising vital infrastructure, cybersecurity firm Malwarebytes provides a high-level review of cyber threats to the water sector and the interdependencies between water and other critical infrastructure sectors. The author writes a compelling reason why water/wastewater could be the most critical sector of all (but we already know that). The article reviews some incidents that have occurred at water/wastewater facilities during the past several years, including the ransomware attacks at ONWASA and the City of Atlanta, and how the Atlanta Department of Watershed was significantly impacted. The post includes a reference to a valuable water sector specific resource: the 2018 Cybersecurity Risk and Responsibility in the Water Sector report by the American Water Works Association (AWWA).
