The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) recently made available the 2018 National Inventory of Dams (NID), the latest version of a tool that was first published in 1975. This online database contains charts, queries, and maps of over 91,000 dams across the country; it can serve as a useful resource to inform water and wastewater utilities, other critical infrastructure assets, and emergency managers about the dams in their areas. The NID lists dams with at least one of the following criteria: high hazard potential classification, significant hazard potential classification, equal to or exceed 25 feet in height and exceeds 15 acre-feet in storage, and equal to or exceeds 50 acre-feet in storage and exceeds six feet in height. Changes to the latest NID give users the ability to download and export data and view hazard potential classification. Beginning this year, the NID will be updated annually. Access the NID at USACE.
