California Responds to Numerous Wildfires

While much of the U.S. East Coast has been contending with Tropical Storm Isaias, on the other side of the country communities are faced with a very different hazard: wildfires. By last Thursday the Caldwell Fire in Northern California had burned nearly 80,000 acres, making it the state’s largest since 2018. Having burned in a remote area, in and near Modoc National Forest, it does not appear to have affected any buildings or populated areas and was largely contained over the past weekend.

Succession Planning Resources for Public Safety Communications

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has announced the release of the SAFECOM Succession Planning Resources for Public Safety Communications Toolkit, which is intended to help retain communications skillsets and mitigate the loss of communications personnel. This document provides helpful templates to document and track communications systems and training.

Federal Disaster Assistance for Hurricanes during COVID-19

The Congressional Research Service (CRS) has published a report on the types of federal assistance that may be available to state, territorial, and tribal governments, private nonprofit organizations, private entities, and individuals and households in response to a hurricane. Some of the assistance programs discussed in the report include Public Assistance, the National Flood Insurance Program, and Hazard Mitigation Assistance. It all discusses the federal government’s funding for emergencies and natural disasters.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has published The CISA Services Catalog, which is intended to serve as a single touch point for anyone interested in CISA’s services. One section of this resource is interactive, allowing partners to quickly focus on the services that best fit their capabilities and challenges based on their characteristics and maturity level.

Hurricane Douglas (2020)

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Hurricane Douglas continues to approach the main Hawaiian Islands, potentially passing dangerously close to, or over, the islands late tonight through Sunday night. The NHC adds Douglas brings a triple threat of damaging winds, flooding rainfall, and dangerously high surf.

Watches and warnings are in effect for portions of the Hawaiian Islands.

New Value Analysis Guide and Brochure Help Agencies Evaluate Emergency Communications Cost Effectiveness

A new guide aims to help organizations determine right-sized solutions for their emergency communications systems and equipment. It was developed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) in partnership with SAFECOM and the National Council of Statewide Interoperability Coordinators to help organizations analyze various features and strike the right balance between cost and value. EPA Updates Utility Resilience Resources

On July 15, EPA announced that it had completed a series of updates to resources that are part of its Creating Resilient Water Utilities (CRWU) program. The updates include an additional 38 new strategies added to its Resilient Strategies Guide, a new case study of how one utility used CRWU resources to support assessments related to America’s Water Infrastructure Act (AWIA) compliance, and improvements made to the Storm Surge Inundation map.

Tropical Storm Fay

Friday, July 10 at 8:00 am ET

The National Hurricane Center reports a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for coastal areas from Delaware to Rhode Island for Tropical Storm Fay. As of 8:00 am, Fay was about 55 miles south-southeast of Ocean City, Maryland and moving north at 5 mph. On the forecast track, the center of Fay is expected to move near the mid-Atlantic coast today and move inland over the mid-Atlantic or the northeast United States late tonight or on Saturday.
