Study: Atlantic Hurricanes Now More Likely to Intensify into Major Storm within 24 Hours of Formation

The Associated Press has written an article on a new study from Rowan University that finds Atlantic hurricanes are more likely to intensify from a Category 1 storm to a major hurricane (Category 3 or higher) within 24 hours of forming. By comparing tropical cyclones between the period of 1971 to 1990 and 2000 to 2020, the research found the percentage of rapidly intensified storms went from 3.2 percent to 8.1 percent, or over double the increase. This intensification effect occurred more regularly along the East Coast than the Gulf of Mexico.

NOAA Winter Outlook Predicts Wetter Weather in the South, Warmer Conditions in the North

With El Niño in place for the first time in four years, this winter is expected to bring wetter condition in the South, leading to some drought improvement, as well as warmer-than-average temperatures in the North, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in recently released U.S. Winter Outlook.

FBI Releases 2022 Crime in the Nation Statistics

The FBI has released data on over 11 million criminal offenses reported to the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, largely through the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) and the Summary Reporting System (SRS). Overall, the Crime in the Nation, 2022 data set covers 93.5 percent of the national population of the U.S.

The FBI’s crime statistics estimates for 2022 show national violent crime decreased an estimated 1.7% in 2022 compared to 2021 estimates:
