The White House has released a fact sheet containing a slate of new initiatives to protect Americans from extreme heat waves the nation is currently suffering from. As heat waves are expected to grow in intensity due to climate change, this will be a multi-year effort.

The first initiative is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA’s) establishment of two virtual research centers whose mandate will be “to help communities manage and improve resilience to extreme heat.” The second initiative is the establishment of a National Heat Strategy, through the White House Interagency Working Group on Extreme Heat and the National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS). The White House will also be convening federal, state, local, and tribal leaders from communities facing extreme heat events to identify immediate solutions. This suite of initiatives builds on prior reporting of White House efforts, including the 2022 launch of Heat.gov. Read more at the White House.
