Summary: Earlier this month, the FBI published its “2024 Active Shooter Incidents in the United States” report, which provides an overview of active shooter incidents to help public safety officials and other stakeholders understand the levels of threats associated with active shooter incidents.

Analyst Note: According to the FBI’s statistics, in 2024 there were 24 active shooter incidents. Incidents decreased by 50% from 2023 (48 incidents). The 24 active shooter incidents in 2024 occurred in 19 states and represent five types of locations, including public gatherings, commerce, education, government, and houses of worship. In five incidents (21%), there was an identified connection between the shooter and the location and/or at least one victim, which underscores the importance of early bystander intervention. These shooters can be categorized as insider threats, according to the FBI.

Active shooter incidents and mass casualty attacks continue to be a threat for individuals and organizations across the country. In January, for example, an employee at a plumbing business in Puerto Rico shot and killed four co-workers before killing himself.  Last week, the FBI reportedly thwarted a planned mass shooting and improvised explosive attack at a mall in Washington state.
