Today is the “Great ShakeOut,” a time when people and organizations around the world are encouraged to participate in an earthquake drill that involves the steps of “Drop! Cover! Hold On!” Earthquakes can happen anywhere at work, at home, or even on vacation. Therefore, it’s important to be prepared for emergencies.

As the event organizers remind us, it’s important to hold drills like this and rehearse important actions because there may only be seconds to protect yourself in an earthquake before strong shaking knocks you down or something drops on you. While the event organizers encourage partners to hold their drills today, and at 10:20 local time specifically, the drill can be held when and where it is most practicable for the participants. The Great ShakeOut website contains information about how to conduct or participate in a drill, including Powerpoints that can be used for conducting a drill. Additionally, visitors can access other information and resources about earthquake preparedness, including videos, earthquake safety guides, and information on other exercises. Read more and access the resources at the Great ShakeOut website.
