October 6 to 12 is Fire Prevention Week, when the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and its partners advocate how to stay safe in case of a fire. This year’s message focuses on planning for and practicing escapes in the case of home fires, but the NFPA emphasizes that its messages regarding fire preparedness apply to virtually any location. “Situational awareness is a skill people need to use wherever they go,” said the NFPA in a press release. “No matter where you are, look for available exits. If the alarm system sounds, take it seriously and exit the building immediately.” The NFPA also observes that, based on its findings, many people don’t understand the life-threatening risks from heat and toxic smoke produced by fires in modern buildings. To help get the word out and assist preparedness efforts, the NFPA has made available outreach materials and social media messages, which can be customized based on audience and facility.
