This week, FEMA announced two funding opportunities for the National Dam Safety Program. The total grant funding available, through the Rehabilitation of the High Hazard Potential Dam Program and the National Dam Safety State Assistance Grant Program, is approximately $211 million.
According to FEMA, the National Dam Safety Program is a partnership of states, federal agencies and other stakeholders to encourage and promote the establishment and maintenance of effective federal and state dam safety programs to reduce the risk to human life, property, and the environment from dam related hazards. The Rehabilitation of High Hazard Potential Dams program provides technical, planning, design, and construction assistance in the form of grants for the rehabilitation of eligible high hazard potential dams. Eligible subrecipients include non-federal governments and non-profit organizations. Roughly $185 million is available through that fund. Another approximately $26 million is available through the National Dam Safety State Assistance Grant Program to establish and maintain effective state programs to ensure dam safety and protect human life and property. In a state or territory with an enacted dam safety program, the state administrative agency or an equivalent state agency is eligible to apply. Each eligible state may submit only one grant application. Eligible applicants are encouraged to review the funding opportunities notices on Grants.gov and apply by the deadline on February 29, 2024.
