The FBI has published a Private Industry Notification (PIN) observing that cyber criminals are focusing their operations to target employees of companies worldwide who maintain network access and an ability to escalate network privilege. The FBI explains that during COVID-19 shelter-in-place and social distancing orders, many companies had to quickly adapt to changing environments and technologies and may not be fully monitoring network access and privilege escalation. And as more tools to automate services are implemented on companies’ networks, the ability to keep track of who has access to different points on the network, and what type of access they have, will become more difficult to regulate. The PIN includes a list of recommended mitigation measures and encourages recipients to report suspicious or criminal activity to their local FBI field office or the FBI’s 24/7 CyberWatch (CyWatch) at (855)292-3937 or CyWatch@fbi.gov.
