Explosive storms are continuing to move across the eastern and central parts of the country this week. This activity follows in the aftermath of deadly storms on Monday, which killed two and left more than one million Americans without power from Georgia to New York.

Forecasters are tracking a wet pattern that’s expected to appear east of the Rocky Mountains by midweek and move towards the east coast by Friday, causing thunderstorms and potential floods due to the volume of rainfall along the way. As noted in previous WaterISAC reporting, due to climate change, a warmer atmosphere is able to hold more precipitation, resulting in more floods caused by rain, which are often larger compared to other types of floods, such as those caused by snowmelt. This trend, combined with the fact that U.S. flood risk is underestimated by the government, means members should maintain heightened vigilance in the week ahead. Read more at AccuWeather.
