CISA and FBI Warn of Valentine’s Day Scams

Both the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the FBI have released advisories warning of internet romance scams on the occasion of Valentine’s Day. The FBI’s advisory explains well-rehearsed criminals search dating sites, apps, chat rooms, and other social media networking sites attempting to build “relationships” for the sole purpose of getting your money or your personally identifiable information. Scammers use poetry, flowers, and other gifts to reel in victims, all while declaring their “undying love.” The FBI also advises being careful about what you post online because scammers can use that information against you. The FBI also encourages victims to report to file complaints with its Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at ic3.gov. The CISA advisory also refers victims to the IC3, as well as pointing to a resource that can help prevent one becoming a victim in the first place, it’s Security Tip on Staying Safe on Social Networking Sites. Access the advisories at the FBI and CISA.
